The journey up to find the redwoods

We seemed to be travelling all day today as we kept stopping to view the sea and the trees!

We are now in a best western at Fortuna California near to Humbolt national park. We have decided not to travel up any further as there is so much round here to discover.

We sadly had an accident this afternoon. We are unharmed but the hire car is not. A deer ran out into the front of the car on my passenger side. Neither of us saw it until it hit the car. We think it ran out of a garden straight onto the road and into us. It died straight away. So sad……

We drove up the coast road which isn’t the quickest way to go but it was so beautiful, very winding and long.

imageimageimageAs It was getting late afternoon we decided to head inland to pick up the 101 road, a bit of a mistake as this road was even more winding with steeper bends and hilly. It was a lovely road but not when you are tired. Once we hit the 101 it was plain sailing. We saw a few red woods on the 101 and they were impressive but in the Humbolt park we will find hundreds of them, I can’t wait!

We are in another lovely hotel room, here for 5 nights. Love to you all (I will add photos later) xxxxxx

And the dream continue…thank you for sharing the magic again.
Good you allow yourself to change from the plan too, you have no obligation of any sort, so take your time to adapt plans to fit with the view!
Hope you are not too tired by all the driving.

What did you do with the damaged car and deer then?
Hope you do not have any after shock-pain or anything.

All is well in the UK. Cold and rain and wind, storm in London so we can imagine the rest of the country must be in worse shape.
Lots of love from us 3

  2. Hi Blandine, the distances in US are always so long but it was the bends in the roads which slowed us right down and we had not foreseen this!
The deer hit us and then slid across the road so we didn’t have to move it. The front bumper is smashed and the bonnet has a dent in it but the car is drive-able still and we have full insurance on it. It did shock us a bit as you can imagine.
The coastal road had amazing views and the road inland to the 101 was fantastic too but required concentration all the time which made us tired. We have 5 nights here before we return to SF and we will go back on the 101 which is much easier driving.
Looking forward to our time here xxx love to you Matthew and Louis xxx
